Kindergarten FAQs

What’s the curriculum?

We offer an accelerated curriculum as well as individualized advancements based on each child's unique learning abilities.  Please see the subject details below:

  • We use A Beka (Christian homeschool) curriculum for our kindergarten reading and math instruction.  Teachers provide guided instruction, small group activities, and daily individualized attention to monitoring student progress.
  • Science and social studies are taught in theme-based units.  Teachers draw from various sources to build these units.
  • Jesus/Bible time happens daily, and chapel occurs every Wednesday.
  • Handwriting, Spanish, physical education, art, music class, and choir are also incorporated multiple times a week.
  • Our kindergarten program also believes in learning through play.  The students enjoy 2 recesses per day (30 minutes each), and free play time is also incorporated daily.

What will my child’s daily schedule look like?

A weekly Kindergarten sample schedule is available for download by clicking here.  We have 3 kindergarten classrooms, and each teacher will have a slightly different schedule.  The sample will give you a general idea of the lessons and activities that occur through the week.

Does Redeemer have requirements for students coming into kindergarten?

Prior to the start of school (when possible), the students are individually assessed to determine their kindergarten readiness.  We meet each child where they are developmentally, but generally, we hope that children will be able to identify all letters of the alphabet - including uppercase and lowercase letters - as well as numbers from 1 - 29 as they enter kindergarten at Redeemer.

What if we aren’t Lutheran and what about the “Jesus time”?

“Jesus time” mostly encompasses stories from the Bible.  Being part of the Lutheran denomination is not a requirement as we welcome families from multiple faith backgrounds.  Redeemer Lutheran School does promote Christian beliefs, values, and morals based on Biblical teaching.

What is the student-teacher ratio?

The maximum classroom ratio for kindergarten is 18:1; however, we have a school-wide ratio of 13:1 due to teachers that provide enrichment classes and special resources.  Not including our preschool program, Redeemer Lutheran School has a capacity to accommodate 438 students from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Is there a Dress Code?

Yes, we require all elementary and middle school students to wear uniform bottoms and tops.

Is before and after school care available and what is the cost?

Yes, various schedules and pricing are offered for before and after school care.  Before school care opens at 7 am, and after school, care closes at 6 pm.  Dependent upon need, pricing ranges from $50 to $230 per month.

How do we accommodate gifted and special needs students?

While we are able to customize the curriculum to keep gifted students engaged and progressing forward, we also provide services for students that may need special care to overcome learning differences.  We appreciate conversations with parents and our special education teachers to determine the best accommodations for your child and his/her unique circumstances.

How is technology incorporate into kindergarten classrooms?

Each of our classrooms is equipped with a computer, an iPad, and a SMART Board.  These technologies are used to supplement and individualize instruction per the teacher's discretion.

Do we have standardized testing?

We do not test students in kindergarten or 1st grade.  Redeemer students take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) starting in 2nd grade in order for us to fulfill accreditation requirements.  The ITBS test is used only to understand where our children are as one unit and are not used for pass-fail purposes.

Do we offer financial assistance?

Yes, tuition assistance may be offered based on financial need.  This is calculated through FACTS Management, our 3rd party tuition management company.  Families seeking assistance must submit a Grant & Aid application through FACTS, and submitting an application does not guarantee an offer of tuition assistance.  Assistance may be offered in amounts from 0 - 50% of yearly tuition costs based on the recommendations from FACTS.  Redeemer Lutheran School also offers discounts for multiple children in a family as well as discounts for Redeemer Lutheran Church members (requires regular attendance).
