Understanding Admissions and Enrollment

If this is your first time considering a private Christian education, learning about the admissions and enrollment processes will provide your family with a more informed decision, a smoother transition, and a better overall experience.

ADMISSIONS VS. ENROLLMENT

At Redeemer, admission and enrollment are two different processes.  Both are requirements.

  • ADMISSIONS: The admissions process is first and involves "applying" to get into the school, much like that of colleges.  It requires an application approval by the school and acceptance by parents for enrollment to be offered.  This article offers more general information about Admissions: Admissions 101  (Source: Private School Review).
  • ENROLLMENT: Enrollment processing includes an official offer to students to enroll in classes along with gathering necessary data for students and families to be appropriately serviced.  Official enrollment involves completion of all enrollment documentation.

THE SIMPLIFIED PROCESS OF ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT

  1. Admission Application (parent action)
  2. Application Approval (school action)
  3. Admission Acceptance (parent action)
  4. Offer to Enroll (school action)
  5. Enrollment Acceptance via document completion (parent action)
  6. Official Enrollment (school action)

THE 10-STEP ADMISSIONS PROCESS

The information below provides detailed step-by-step instructions starting with the admissions process towards securing official enrollment at Redeemer Lutheran School (Austin) for our kindergarten through the 8th-grade program.

STEP 1: RESEARCH PRIVATE VS. PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE CHRISTIAN (recommended)

The first step that parents should take is learning about the variety of school choices.  Here are a few ways to arm yourself:

  1. Ask friends, relatives, and co-workers about their experiences.  Find others who have attended schools you are considering if possible.
  2. Search the internet for articles and school reviews.  Research should include a general approach, but it should also narrow in focusing on "Texas" schools as well as "Austin" schools.   General research may be helpful but searching locally will provide a better comparison.
  3. Put together a list of at least 3 – 5 prospective schools that you would like to learn more about in your area.
  4. From the list that you develop, consider the following: location/proximity, pricing, school mission/values, academics/curriculum, and the personality of the school.
  5. Plan to visit the schools by contacting their Admissions Department.  Schedule visits during the day when students, teachers, and administrators are on campus so that you may witness the attitudes and environment of the school.

STEP 2:  SCHEDULE TO VISIT REDEEMER / TOURING & PROGRAM OVERVIEW (required)

Parents considering a private Christian education for their children should plan to visit the school.  As part of our scheduled tours, our Marketing and Admissions Director provides an extensive program overview and focused communication with families to tailor an exceptional experience for visiting families.

Call or e-mail The Marketing and Admissions Director at (512) 451-6478 / LWhited@redeemer.net or inquire for more general information using our online Inquiry Form.

It is best practice for parents so make initial visits without child first as part of the educational experience.  We proudly invest personal attention to families and prefer to nurture discussions that may be easier with parents first.  After parents have indeed narrowed their school selection choices down to 1 - 2 schools, schedule a second visit with your child so that they may have an opportunity to see and experience the campus in an age appropriate way.  Multiple tours are offered and encouraged.

STEP 3:  STUDENT SHADOW DAY (may be required)

Depending on the social and emotional development of your child as well as their age, a shadow day may be encouraged and required.  Many parents enjoy having their children vested in the decision-making process of selecting a private school.  In general, some children may also appreciate an opportunity to have a school choice decision as well.  Please consider scheduling a time for students entering 2nd-8th grade to shadow.  (see “schedule a shadow day”)

Note: As part of the admission application process, an in-house assessment is required.  Many times providing the assessment can be offered during a shadowing student’s time on campus.

STEP 4: PARENT DECISION TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION

Once Redeemer has been selected as your family’s school choice, the next step is to go through the admissions application process to gain an Admissions Acceptance Status.  Applications for admission are received and processed on an annually revolving basis.  What this means is that enrollment invitations are offered continuously (i.e. all year) without an official deadline date although priority enrollment dates are typically offered in January and February.

The Redeemer Application for New Student Admission is available online immediately.  A $25 application fee is applied at the time of submission through our Online Application.  Credit Cards are accepted.

PREPARE TO APPLY ONLINE:

Families applying for 1st - 8th Grades will be asked to provide information in numbers 1 - 5 below.  Families applying for Kindergarten will be asked to provide information in numbers 1 – 3.

  1. Principal or a Preschool Early Childhood Director Recommendation Form (principal or director e-mail address needed)
  2. Teacher Recommendation Form (teacher e-mailaddress needed)
  3. Copy of students Birth Certificate (in PDF or Word format)
  4. Copy of student's most recent Report Card(in PDF or Word format) – not required for prospective kindergarten applicants
  5. Copy of student's most recent Standardized Test Results- applies to students who have taken them; typically, 3rd grade and above in Texas (in PDF or Word format)

Application Location: http://www.redeemerschool.net/apps/pages/admissionsapplication

STEP 5:  IN-HOUSE ASSESSMENT (required 1st - 8th grades)

Schedule to have your prospective student come to Redeemer for a 30-minute computer-based reading assessment.  The results of the assessment are considered during application review.  The in-house assessment is not needed for families applying for kindergarten, but it is for those entering 1st - 8th grades.

By submitting your information, you agree to send it to Redeemer Lutheran Preschool & School who will process and use it according to their privacy policy.  All information provided via inquiry will remain confidential.

STEP 6:  APPLICATION SUBMISSION

Once the online application has been completed, and all documentations have been received by the Admissions Director, the application submission is considered to be complete.

STEP 7:  APPLICATION PROCESSING

Upon submission of the application and ALL addition documentation as listed in Step 4 and Step 5, The Marketing and Admissions Director will submit the application to the Principal for continued processing.  The Principal will approve or decline the application.

STEP 8:  NOTIFICATION OF ADMISSION DECISION

If the application is approved for admissions, an official admission acceptance notification from The Marketing and Admissions Director is typically provided within 48 business hours from the complete submission date via phone call, e-mail, or both.  Approved applications will receive a status of "Approved Application."

STEP 9:  APPLICATION ADMISSION ACCEPTANCE STATUS

Along with the notification of admission approval, a request to submit the Annual Enrollment Fee will be included.  Once the Annual Enrollment Fee has been received, the status of "Approved Application Status" is updated to a status of "Admissions Acceptance."  THE NON-REFUNDABLE ENROLLMENT AND NEW STUDENT FEE WILL BE REQUESTED AT THIS TIME.  THE FEE IS REFUNDABLE ONLY IF ENROLLMENT IS NOT OFFERED.

STEP 10: WAIT AND PREPARE FOR AN INVITATION TO ENROLL

Admissions Acceptance applicants will either go on a waitlist to be offered enrollment during one of the three priority enrollment timeframes or will receive an offer to enroll immediately dependent upon the time of year for which the application has been received and approved.

A. PRIORITY ENROLLMENT OF ADMISSION ACCEPTANCE APPLICANTS (JAN - FEB)

Applications that are approved on or before official priority enrollment dates will be offered enrollment in the January or February timeframe for the year in which the admissions applicant(s) will start school in August.

Admission Acceptance applicants are placed on an Enrollment Invitation waiting list.  The waiting list is developed in order based upon the two following criteria:

  • Approval of the Application
  • Submission of the Annual Enrollment Fee

Once both of these steps are completed, the application is date and time-stamped and is then placed on the Admission Accepted Enrollment Invitation waitlist in chronological order.

B. REVOLVING ENROLLMENT OF ADMISSION ACCEPTANCE APPLICANTS (FEB - ONGOING)
Applications that are approved after official priority enrollment dates (mid-February) will be offered enrollment immediately if an opening is available withing the grade level for which the applicant has completed the admissions processing. If there is no space available, families will go on a Revolving Admissions waitlist.  Families will be contacted as space becomes available (if it does).

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED

It's important to understand that newly applying students (mostly incoming Kindergarteners) for the upcoming year may be "Approved for Admissions" as early as August of the previous year for which a family is applying.  Families are placed on a first-come-first-served list in the order which the applications are approved, and the Annual Enrollment Fee is paid.  Once admission is granted, and we know that a spot is available for placement, you will receive an electronic "Enrollment Invitation."  Enrollment Invitations are provided in February and the order for which they are received.

Because of the first-come-first-served offerings, it's best to apply immediately if Redeemer Lutheran School is the school your family has chosen.  The application fee is $25.  Note: an Annual $525 Enrollment Fee along with a $200 New Student Fee is requested after applications have been officially approved for admission.

THE ENROLLMENT PROCESS

Redeemer will start offering enrollment by invitation via e-mail notifications.

Priority Enrollment Invitations are offered based upon the following three timeframes but are also offered in order of the Admission Acceptance waitlist:

  1. January: Reenrollment of current families and newly enrolling siblings.
  2. Early February: Current Redeemer Lutheran Church Members.
  3. February: New-to-Redeemer Families.
2017 - 2018 OFFICIAL PRIORITY TIMEFRAMES
  • Re-enrollment and Sibling Enrollment: Friday, Jan 20 - Friday, Feb 3rd, 2017
  • Church Member Enrollment: Friday, Feb 3rd - Wednesday, Feb 8th, 2017
  • New-to-Redeemer Early Bird Invitations: Wednesday, Feb 8th - Wednesday, Feb 15th, 2017

From mid-February on, all Admission Acceptance families should anticipate receiving an offer to enroll, if space is available, within a few days from the date of acceptance.  If not, these families can opt-in to our revolving waitlist.

STEP 11:  OFFERING ENROLLMENT VIA ENROLLMENT INVITATION

If a spot opens for enrollment within your child’s grade and has a status of Admission Acceptance, an official offer to enroll will be electronically sent during priority enrollment (January - February) or after that time until all class spaces per grade are filled.  The following chart below show the number of students that Redeemer can enroll annually:

While some schools in the Austin area provide a hard deadline for applying and then a short block of time for enrollment offers, Redeemer continues to accept applications and offer enrollment without deadlines as long as space is available.  In other words, applications received after enrollment dates in January and February will continue to be processed. Inquire with the Admissions Director for available space (512) 451-6478 or lwhited@redeemer.net

STEP 12: RESPOND BY COMPLETING THE ELECTRONIC ENROLLMENT PACKET

Completing the Enrollment documents and submitting all supplemental paperwork officially reserves space for your child for the following school year.

STEP 13: NOTIFICATION OF COMPLETED ENROLLMENT

You will be notified that your enrollment is complete or if there is a reason it is still pending.  Families will be electronically notified of classroom assignments in June or July of the current year.  Back-to-School meetings will be offered in August, class supply lists will be provided along with more logistical details.
