PHONICS AND READING

A Beka (Christian Phonics)

A to Z Readers

The Daily 5

The Phonics program begins with children learning to recognize the vowels and consonants in the alphabet. They then progress to learning the sounds of vowels and consonants, to reading blends and words. The sounding of one-vowels words, sounds of long vowels, two-vowel words, and eventually reading the special phonics sounds gives the children the basis for good reading strategies and skills.

The children also read a variety of colorful and interesting books through the Reading A-Z program. Each student is assessed at his/her reading level and progresses throughout the school year. These books help the students apply and master the phonics rules they are learning.

HANDWRITING

Handwriting is integrated throughout the day. Handwriting is practiced as part of our Phonics and Math curriculum. Additional opportunities for practicing writing and fine motor skills are included during morning work, Writer’s Workshop at the Writing Center, in the Word Work Center, and with our Hands-on Math Box activities. It is also integrated within many weekly special activities.
